B: I guess that’s why he has turned over a new leaf.

A: 심장이식 수술 이후로, John은 하늘에서 덤으로 준 삶을 이어서 살아가고 있다고 생각하더라고.

B: 그가 개과천선 한 것 같아.

 

living on borrowed time : ‘(노인환자 등이) 살아남아 덤의 삶을 보내다, 의외로 오래 살다’ 이 표현은 1800년대 후반기쯤부터 사용되기 시작했다. ‘Borrowed time’은 사망할 것으로 예상되던 시기가 지났는데도 살아 있음을 의미한다.
