A : I read every book I could about horses as a kid. When I actually had a chance to ride one, I was terrified, and terribly embarrassed!

B : You could have saved your dignity if you had indulged your love of horses in a more vicarious manner.

A : “난 어렸을 때 말에 관한 것이면 어떤 책이든 읽었어. 막상 말을 탈 기회가 왔을 때는 너무 무서웠고 당황스러웠어!”

B : “그냥 책을 통해 대리만족을 느끼는 식으로 말에 대한 사랑을 계속 가졌더라면, 그런 창피한 경험은 하지 않았을 걸.”

vicarious 어원적 의미는 substitute ‘다른 것을 대신한다’라는 의미다. experienced through the actions of other people 즉 다른 사람들의 행동을 통해서 간접 경험된 것을 말할 때 사용하는 단어이다.
